Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Earth Science to 159 9th graders in addition to several students that are in 10th, 11th and 12th grade. We are in a high-need community, short of most supplies as well as classrooms. It is important that my kids know they are important enough to have reliable equipment to learn with. Most of my kids come from broken homes, or homes where drug and alcohol abuse is common. In one of my classes I have 12 special needs kids that need hands-on activities to stimulate learning.

Because of the 2 large earthquakes in Indonesia today, my students have an interest in earthquakes. Funding this project will give us an opportunity to take a teachable moment beyond discussion - we will be able to put it into action!

We need a seismometer! We live in Southern California in a tectonically active zone where daily there will be information for the kids to analyze. The Seismometer we would like to get will allow the students to work in groups on long-term studies of earthquake activities usually reserved for college classrooms. My students will benefit because this will take learning beyond the classroom - in addition, they will know it was donors that paid for it - to them, that will mean that a stranger cared about them. For my kids, having someone care enough to ensure their success is a surprise.

Your help and support of this project will help my students to see a world beyond the city limits that they live in. Please help me in my endeavor to deliver the world of Earth Science to my students - they truly deserve it!
