My Students

Our school has routine lock-downs, fire drills and stay-put drills. However, I am concerned that we are just going through the motions. I want to be prepared to handle any disaster - man-made or natural. My goal is to have the equipment to do this by the end of this school year.

We have students in grades 7 - 12.

These students come from varied social, economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds. The school is located in an older part of the city on a side street between two busy thoroughfares. There is no busing and no cafeteria. The building is old and dark. Money is usually spent on urgently needed items rather than on preventative measures. Safety is a major concern due to our location, the weather, and the potential for earthquakes. Temperatures easily reach -20 below in the winter. Earthquakes occur daily. Most are not felt, however, scientists say we are past due for a large earthquake the magnitude of the 1964 quake (9.2). To aid in our preparation for any type of disaster, we need readily available emergency supplies.

My Project

The staff and students will not only feel safer, but will actually be more secure during school hours. With emergency equipment readily available for each classroom, including backpacks to store medical supplies in, emergency flashlights, Mylar blankets and industrial gloves for search and rescue efforts, staff and students can concentrate on what they are in school to do - to teach and to learn. This emergency equipment, in addition to a screen to block off triage areas, will aid our school in handling any adverse event that is likely to happen. We all have a tremendous responsibility to ensure the safety of our students and we are eager to meet this responsibility head on. As the school nurse of these adolescents, I will rest better knowing that I have done all I can to make our school the safest environment it can be. What better way to show our concern and caring than to make safety a priority with our students? We will show that student welfare is a priority.

We are role-modeling positive behavior for our students.

Many of our students come from families who do not plan ahead. This project can facilitate parent and student thinking in the areas of planning and preparation. There is no budget for safety items in our school. Our district is facing a 21 million dollar budget cut this year. We never know when our adolescents' safety may be compromised by either man-made or natural disasters. We want to be adequately prepared.
