My Students

Student: That's a rock! Teacher: What kind of rock? Student: I don't know. A rock I would find on the ground! Teacher: Really? Are you sure? This is the kind of conversation that takes place every year when I try to teach Earth Science. It's time for a change and it can happen with your help!

My class is located in an urban inner-city area of Maryland.

Most of the students have not had effective science instruction so far in their academic life, and I plan to make a change THIS YEAR! I have received extensive Earth Science training this summer and with your help, I plan to teach my students what this planet we live on is like and why it is important to know how to preserve it for future generation to enjoy.

My Project

We will examine the earth through experiments on mineral identification, weathering, erosion, and plate tectonic. My students will learn what minerals or rocks we see everyday are, why they are important to know and use, and what happens when the earth shifts and moves. But that cannot be accomplished without your support of this project. I could just go out and collect as many rocks as I can and create my own "rock" collections, but I am not a geologist. These kits have sufficient samples that are categorized and labeled to make the instruction deeper than a collection of two or three different rocks I can find on the sidewalk.

Please make it possible for them to see the earth in a way that they will appreciate where we have come from in the last 4.6 million years and what may or may not happen to our planet in the future million years.
