Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students often describe Earth/Environmental Science class as "super lame". I teach ninth grade Earth/Environmental Science at a school where only 38% of our students are on grade level. We have made it our mission to accept students who have been turned away everywhere else. Our mission is to foster learning and prepare students for college.

Earth Science class is a hard sell. Students care little for rocks and minerals, and want to know what the relevance is and how will this class prepare them for college or make a difference in the world. Most of the Earth Science materials available lack a true challenge for students. The Students have learned the material in Elementary and Middle School, and are tired of the same stuff.

We need a program that will both challenge students and provide some significance for them. The GLOBE program (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is an Earth Science System Project supported by NASA and the NSF (National Science Foundation) who recognize that students need more inquiry based learning programs to prepare them for college. Their mission is to "...promote and support students, teachers and scientists to collaborate on inquiry based investigations of the environment and Earth system..." (www.globe.gov).

Your support will ensure that students are being challenged and are taking an interest in learning Earth Science, and students will see the relevance of their studies as it makes a world impact. Students who are challenged in high school are ready for the ultimate student challenge: college.
