My Students

Learning to use electronic data collectors in middle school prepares students for high school science classes and beyond. This project is not just learning to use the meters in unrelated experiments but doing a product review with materials they use every day and which have relevance to their lives.

Our school is a math and science academy located in a low income area of a large city in Illinois.

We need to level the playing field for our students in order for them to compete with those from higher income areas. We do this by working to provide cutting edge experiences for our students. Learning to use electronic data collection has been in our curriculum for a few years now and the middle school students are familiar with temperature probes, voltage regulators and CO2 gas sensors. Having working equipment that uses the technology available really inspires my children to figure out how to use them to learn the skill, collect the data and create graphs. They do not see many professional people in their neighborhood so the idea of them becoming a scientist has to be reinforced by us teachers.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Vernier Sound Level Meters. Students will use them to test the decibel level of headphones and hair dryers, both of which are used in close proximity to the human ear. After collecting data on the decibel level of these items, students will construct a comparison graph and prepare a product review, recommending one brand over the other. This is the work done by Consumer Reports magazine, for example, and this experiment will provide information on the skills needed to do those jobs.

As teachers we always have to be looking forward, preparing our students for what is to come.

Getting these resources into the schools of lower income students who are eager to learn, and to the teachers who are eager to share their passion and experience can only make the work force of tomorrow better equipped and better educated. You can be a part of that better tomorrow.
