Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students have 3 opportunities every day to choose a book from our classroom library and read to themselves or with a partner. Currently, my students reading at the K or 1st grade level have read the few books I own many times over. It's time to get them some new books!
I teach second grade in a public charter school located in the Fruitvale neighborhood of East Oakland, CA.
Most of our students live within walking distance of our school. Many of my students are new to English. Reading these early reader titles will help support their English language development, as well as their general reading skills. They are eager to read more and will be very appreciative of the gift of new books.
My Project
My students have seat sacks attached to the back of their chairs (a donor's choose funded project). In those seat sacks, they are allowed to keep five books of their choice from my leveled classroom library. I've taught them at which level they're currently reading and where in my library they can find those books. They get to trade out five books twice a week. They read so much that many of them have already read all the books at their level.
If this project gets funded, my students reading at a K and 1st grade level will be able to read new books they haven't already read.
I only own a few books at their level. They will be very grateful to read some new books!
