My Project

My kindergarten and 1st grade students in Astoria, New York speak over 34 languages and they are embarking on the adventure of learning to read. Learning to read is a beautiful experience, and all children should be welcomed into the library space through well-written books with gripping plot-lines featuring diverse characters.

We're building a community of readers through diverse early readers!

Unfortunately, many simple-to-read texts do not feature diverse characters -- and we're seeking books about characters from Muslim and Latinx backgrounds. Planet Omar and Sofia Martinez are both early reader series that will be culturally engaging and entertaining. We are also requesting acrylic book organizers to display our favorite series and make them pop on the shelves so they are irresistible. We will give out stic

I've carefully chosen a collection of early chapter books that kids won't be able to put down. This is Part 1 of our ongoing project to build a culturally vivid and varied library. Soon we will have series books featuring characters of every color and background. We will have mysteries, slice of life, adventure and humor. The language might be simple enough for a 1st-2nd grader, but the stories are rich enough for all ages. Students will snuggle up in the blue beanbag chairs in the library and devour these series books while strengthening their reading skills and fluency.
