This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is full of bright-eyed, beautiful children who are excited to learn. The majority of them are low-income and many of them are coming to pre-kindergarten/Kindergarten already behind. They are ready and eager to learn new things and to have new experiences.
Our school is located in the city of Detroit and we are a Title I school where all of the students in the school qualify for free lunch.
Many of our students eat breakfast at school as well. This is the beginning of their educational experience and I want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
My Project
I have books in my classroom for students to use while at school, but this school year is different. All of my students will be learning from home in various learning environments. At school, I have a literacy rich environment with books for various levels. We share two sets of these books, but its impossible to loan them out for students to take home.
Help me get these essential early readers into their hands to build upon their phonics skills and create lifelong readers.
I want to make sure that learning from home does not slow anyone down. In this order I have included tactile letters to help students with letter identification as well as writing letters. Each child will also receive a set of Bob books, which are books they can use their knowledge of phonics to sound out the words.
