Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school in East New York. My students are special needs students with disabilities such as speech and language, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, Learning Disabled and Autism. Most of them are from Hispanic and/or African American backgrounds. They come from single-family homes, non-English speaking parents and have a low social economic status. All of these factors, are known to affect education drastically. Despite all the hardships my students may face when out of the classroom, they still come to school with a smile on their face, ready to learn, every single day.

My Project

My students need a listening center! The materials in my project will be used daily to improve reading skills throughout different subjects. My second graders love to listen to stories and follow along during shared reading. Having a listening center will allow them to work on skills such as vocabulary, fluency, accuracy and expression.

Using technology motivates my students to work to their maximum potential.

This listening center can be used various times throughout the day for readers workshop, Science, Social Studies and Math class. Many of my students are reading far below grade level and give up on books very quickly. Having a listening center will motivate them to explore many more books without frustration.
