My students need enough basketballs and pinnies so all teams can have a productive practice without having to sign up or share equipment. This will help practices run smoothly.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have an ethnically diverse school with 43% English Language learner population. 72% of our students receive free or reduced-rate meals at school. We have very limited funding for our sports program. Serving as one of the basketball coaches the past 2 years we have seen an increase in positive school behavior when our students are involved in after school sports activities. Our school's goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students can not only grow academically but also have the opportunity to be involved in team sports.
My Project
At our school site our goal is to have 6 boys/girls basketball team for grades 3rd-5th. In order for our student-athletes to gain the needed basketball skills they are in need of basketballs and practice pinnies. The proposed equipment will allow the various grade levels to run their practices smoothly, and without the need to share among the 6 school teams.
For most of our students this will be their first experience being involved in a school sport.
It is important that basic fundamental basketball skills are taught, therefore sufficient equipment is needed. The equipment requested will be utilized during weekly practices ( ball handling skills, dribbling drills, and practice games). All teams representing the school site will participate in 6-8 games, as well as participate in league play-off games. We hope to make this a positive experience so students have gain not only basketball skills, but the confidence to carry-on to middle/high school teams as they continue their interest in the game of basketball.
