Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Good morning!" "How was your weekend?" Bright eyes and grinning faces greet me each morning, eager to enter our classroom each day. Occasionally, sad, teary, or even angry eyes greet me as well. All students patiently wait their turn to give me a smile, hug, fist bump, high five or even to share whatever has them feeling blue.

I have the pleasure of teaching 41 amazing and unique individuals, many who are English Language Learners and/or economically disadvantaged, and some who are gifted and talented.

They enter the classroom each day anticipating the day's activities. Even though some students come in with worries, they are soon actively engaged, and, if only for a few hours, worry free.

I have high expectations for my students, and they strive to meet those expectations daily. My goal is to encourage them to be the best fourth graders and lifelong learners they can possibly be. They are the reason I enjoy teaching.

My Project

The Chromebooks will make a vast difference in my students' learning. My school district provides several reading programs for students to freely access, such as Kids A-Z, myOn, and Imagine Literacy. It is difficult rotating 41 students through only five computers each week.

Many of my students do not have internet access at home or cannot utilize the computers at the public library; therefore; my goal is to eventually have a one-to-one student-to-computer ratio to allow students to work on these programs.

The more laptops I have available, the more students will be able to practice their reading skills and prepare for their next progress montoring or benchmark assessments. Students would also be able to work on their essays and use applications such as Storybird to practice and share their writing skills.

The novels, The Mighty Miss Malone and Wonder, and the biography, Tick Tock Banneker's Clock, would not only promote reading for enjoyment and information, but they would also be used to integrate social studies and science into the English Language Arts curriculum. The Scrabble games will be used for brain breaks and inside recess activities, but most importantly, to improve vocabulary and writing skills.

It is my belief that with the addition of the Chromebooks, novels, and literacy games, my students will be more eager to learn and more engaged in the learning. Their comprehension and writing skills will improve, as will be noted on the Middle and End-of-the-Year Benchmarks.
