My Students

I am the lucky teacher of 25 enthusiastic 2nd graders! I teach in a Title I school in which 89% of students receive free lunch. The class contains both native English speakers and students who are learning English as a second language.

My students are bright and eager to learn.

Despite their different languages and varied reading levels, they cheer each other on with each new reading milestone. These students deserve a rich and engaging library to foster a lifelong love of reading!

My Project

Do you remember the book that made you fall in love with reading? A group of 25 second graders are waiting to find that book!

Second grade is a critical year for reading development.

The latest Mayoral Initiative recognizes this and sets the ambitious goal of ensuring that all second graders complete the year reading on grade level.

In order to make this happen, students need to fall in love with reading. They need access to fun, engaging books within their zone of proximal development. Currently the books in our classroom library are old, ripped, drawn in, or traditional early readers that focus on phonics patterns and not engaging plots. The books in this project were hand picked to be both exciting and appropriate reading levels. Students will have access to these books throughout the day and have the opportunity to take them home to share with their families. Let's inspire some book lovers!
