My Students

Every year I welcome students facing a large roadblock, learning a new language and culture. Most of my kids come in and feel very overwhelmed because everything is new: the language, the food, the school, the people, etc. Despite this they are very motivated, and in just a few short months (sometimes weeks), they start to feel more comfortable, take risks with their speaking, and open up. My goal is to help them feel more comfortable, confident, and of course welcomed to this new environment.

Often times, I feel that people underestimate my students' abilities because of their language barrier, when in fact my kids come in with a great wealth of experiences and knowledge, and it is up to me to showcase that to everyone, including the students themselves.

The students I service range from kindergarten to eighth grade, and from having no English language skills or exposure to having some social language. Many are coming with their families from less than ideal living situations in their home countries to Philadelphia in hopes of creating a better life. Their smiles and desire to learn have given me the inspiration to continue to do this work for 13 years.

My Project

These materials will be important to my students because as of now, the literacy materials that are provided are less than engaging and exciting. Also, I have expanded the grades that I am teaching and have a few supplemental materials to support them.

The magazine subscriptions will allow the students to make connections to topics they are interested in, which will, in turn, help them with their English language skills.

Since the articles are based on current events, I plan to have the students use them to write opinion pieces. I also look forward to the articles helping spark discussions within the class that will ease the anxiety of speaking in class since it will likely be a topic they have knowledge about or are at least interested in. It will also allow me to demonstrate to them how to present an argument. The daily literacy journals will be used for my younger students to practice basic grammar and literacy skills. I plan to use this at the start of our class to set the grammar objective for the day. This will be something the students can work on themselves to help boost their confidence with their grammar and speaking skills.

It is important to me to have a comfortable space for the students in the classroom; this is the reason I added the rug, pillows, and flex seating to my list. I envision the students using this space to read, work on their iPads, or just work on an assignment if they feel like they need a change from just sitting at their desk.

Finally, I have added a few classroom supplies that I will need to help keep organized and promote learning within the classroom. I don't have any workbook or textbooks so I use a lot of paper.
