Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Feed our curiosity! My students love to read and love science. With access to a wide variety of trade books, they would be able to read about the topics that interest them.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

The students are curious and love to read. Being a small school, we do not have a traditional library, so they students do not have access to all the books they may want to enjoy. They frequently visit the limited library in the back of the classroom. Most students are carrying a book at all times and bring them out whenever they have free time.

My Project

The limited library in my classroom does not allow all of my students to access a high-interest nonfiction book at the same time. My students love borrowing the few books that I have and read them constantly. I would love to expand this library to include many books to reinforce and enrich the concepts that we are studying in class. I also want to have some biographies about the scientists whose work we study. These books would allow my students to explore the scientific concepts they are interested in on their own time. It would also spark the curiosity of the students and motivate them to ask questions about their world. I want to combine my students' love of reading with their curiosity about the world around them in a productive way. These books would be available for students to use during class as well as after school. Please enrich the classroom experience and help my students increase their scientific literacy.

By helping us get these books, you are ensuring that my students have access to high-interest reading materials.

The students will have options about what to read and can read about different topics that they may not otherwise be exposed to throughout the year. These books will also help with research and content development.
