Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think back to science class. What did you look forward to? The days when you read from a book? Of course not! You craved those hands on lab experiments. With a rocks and minerals kit, my students will be able to test properties and make conclusions as they actively explore Earth Science!

I teach around 90 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our Public Charter School. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every Ward of the District, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and Special Education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in Afternoon Advisory.

My Project

I am trying to prepare my students to be young scientists, encouraging them to design experiments, run tests, and search for answers to their thought out questions. However, without adequate lab equipment for the classroom, it is difficult to allow my students scientific creativity to truly show itself. This rocks and minerals kit would provide enough supplies to enhance a sparse curriculum. The students would be able to manipulate and run tests on the actual rocks and minerals rather than reading about hypothetical results of such tests. This would connect them to the content and thus make them more likely to remember what they have learned. It will spark a love of science and the processes of science in my more hesitant students and confirm and continue that love for my others.

Our school currently has no materials for a rock cycle unit.

While I have already purchased several books and posters on the topic, an actual rocks and minerals kit would make the learning experience so much more meaningful and enjoyable for my students. Please help me create a hands-on, learner centered unit for my 6th grade scholars.
