Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work as a Social Studies teacher for a high-need small school in inner city New York. Most of my juniors are Latino and African American descent and my challenge everyday is to make their educational experience memorable. Memorable through special projects that apply history to community issues. Memorable enough so that they can take it and apply what they learn in college. We need higher retention rates for our students going to college and we can succeed by setting high expectations and building confidence. History allows me to teach social issues which many face in their own communities. I challenge them to solve social issues in their community by researching the origins and conducting outreach to their community.

I face the challenge of moving class to class and not having that home station. Our projector has lost its bulb power which cost more to replace versus buying a new one. My students need a projector to view their assignments in class, documentaries and more importantly understand how to create video and power point presentations for their own research/special projects. Last year students could not show their data when they presented at local student conferences so having a portable projector will enhance their work.

With the new Pico Pocket Projector, I can easily connect it to my lab top or PDA to show lessons, documentaries and instructions on creating power points and videos. A movable projector allows me to move class to class with less set up time increasing valuable learning. I can now easily display student work from their own lab tops and phones anywhere we go. Having this technology allows them to present their findings and solutions anywhere people gather.

You will make it possible for my students to be empowered by giving them the ability to present their findings anywhere they go. Be it school, field trips, research symposiums, community centers and offices of politicians. Their work and research can be displayed anywhere. All my juniors must create a research project around a social issues that exist in their community and propose solutions. This year we hope to increase the amount of student presentations at community centers, police precincts, schools (elementary and middle) and more. Facilitating and presenting will help build their confidence in preparation for the rigors of college. Having this portable projector gives them the visual aid they can use to educate and raise awareness in their community.
