My students need 6 e-readers to access thousands of books from online sources, including free libraries across our State to enhance their learning in a rural school.

My Students

“Embrace the potentials and challenges of this emerging culture not as a replacement for existing print practices but as an expansion of them." -Henry Jenkins. It is our hope to broaden the learning opportunities of our students, teachers and community by providing e-readers to this rural library.

A desire to learn.

A willingness to explore. An enthusiasm for knowledge. An excitement for unknown opportunities. These qualities, and more, are critical to our rural students in Western Montana who, because of their isolation, have some naivety to the world before them. Though, this inspires creative energy for exploration. We are a K-12 school with approximately 170 students. Though our school is small, our students are fortunate to have many opportunities to support education and achievement. Though because of our long distance from a larger city, our students rely heavily upon the school itself for resources of education and interest. The school is often the center of community functions serving to house dances, funerals, elections, community meetings and more. The school library also serves as the community library and is a hub of activity well beyond the school day.

My Project

The school library not only serves as the District library but also as our community library. Students flock to the library for resources of education and interest. Library hours extend well beyond the school day and offer a place for students and community members to gain reading material, use computers, and receive tutoring services. Though, because of our small collection and the length of time for patrons to obtain inter-library loan materials, often the students and community members are left without their wants. By purchasing six e-readers for the library, the school and community will be able to expand its collection by thousands. The library has already gained free access to a site in which patrons can download materials if they have their own e-readers. However, in the high poverty area in which we are located, many people are unable to obtain such technology. It is our hope that we will be able to educate patrons on e-reader use and provide regulated time with them.

By purchasing ereaders, students, teachers and community members will be able to gain access to a world of knowledge.

Teachers will be able to use these to meet the requirements of special needs students (Response to Intervention) and for all, it would support research and student inquiry. Living in rural Montana, outside resources are a must for our community and students. With the help of your support, our patrons will be given free access to what many have at their fingertips.
