My Students

A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play, and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.

Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.

They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices, and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.

My Project

Our first grade team is working together to create a leveled literacy library with multiple copies of books. These books will be introduced and read with students in guided reading groups. After our students read the book with a teacher, they bring it home to read to someone at home. For the next week or so students have the book in their book boxes to re-read each day to practice fluency and deepen their comprehension.

Having leveled books at lower reading levels helps our struggling readers practice reading a variety of books that are just right for them.

We are currently lacking enough Level E books to keep our reading group working at that level. We have four groups of level D and E readers. We have about 15 sets of books at level E which will only keep us going for about a week. In the next few weeks, students will be moving up from level D to level E and there will be a large demand for Level E books. When we run out of materials, we end up moving students to a new level before they are ready. By receiving more books at this level, students will continue working on their early literacy skills while still engaged with varying subjects in their leveled books.

Our overarching goal is to eventually compile enough sets of leveled literacy books that six Kindergarten and First Grade classes will be able to pool their resources, create a leveled book room, and provide students with more opportunity to get new titles in their hands. By providing students with the materials they need, we are engaging them in literacy and creating a lifelong passion for books!
