My Students

Aia no ka pono - o ka hoohuli i ka lima i lalo, aole o ka hoohuli i luna. That is what it should be - to turn the hands palms down, not palms up. No one can work with the palms of his hands turned up. When a person is always busy, he is said to keep his palms down. (Olelo Noeau 71)

Ao au i ka papa ekahi ma o ka olelo Hawaii.

Ao pu au i na keiki kaiapuni e ae ma ka papa malaao, 2, 3, 4, 5, a me 6. Nui ka hoihoi o na keiki e hana me ka lima. He mau keiki keu a ka maikai a eleu lakou. Makemake nui lakou e hele i waho a hana ma ka mala. I teach first graders through speaking Hawaiian. I also teach the other Hawaiian Immersion kids in grades kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. They have a great interest in working with their hands. They are very good and active kids. They really enjoy going outside in the garden and working.

My Project

E hoohana ana na keiki a pau ma ka papahana kaiapuni i keia mau pono hana e hoomaemae a malama i ko kakou mala. Komo kakou i ka mala i na Poakolu a pau e waele i na nahelehele, kopekope i na lau a pela aku. Ke makaukau na mea kanu (na uala/kalo/maia/hei/a me na mea kanu Hawaii e ae), e eli ana i ia mau mea e kaana like, ai, a i ole e kuai aku i ke kaiaulu. No laila, ke a'o ia nei na keiki a pau i ke kanu a malama 'ana i na mea kanu no ko lakou 'ai 'ana a me ko lakou ola 'ana. My students need garden tools to maintain and keep up with our growing mala (garden) such as wheel barrows, rakes, hoes, and other garden tools. All of the kids in the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program will be using these tools to clean and take care of our garden. We get into our garden every Wednesday to take out the weeds, rake the leaves and so forth. When our plants (sweet potatoes, taro, banana, papaya, and various other Hawaiian plants) are ready, we dig them up to share, eat, or sell to our community. Therefore, they are learning to plant and take care of these plants for their own subsistence and to better their lives.

He mea nui keia pahana mala no ka mea he hana keia a ko kakou mau kupuna.

Pono na keiki e hoomaopopo a hapai i ia mau hana a na kupuna i hana mua ai na kakou. He hana maoli keia e hoowaiwai i ko lakou ola me ka ha'aheo. This garden project is very important because this is what our ancestors did. Kids need to understand and be able to carry these traditions that were put in place by our ancestors for us. This kind of work is valuable and will enrich their lives with great pride.
