My Students

Our students are a diverse and dynamic community of 6-8 graders attending CSS in Portland, Oregon. We are a focus-option K-8 public school that relies on inquiry and offers students opportunities to research and discover answers to their own questions. Our school utilizes integrated studies, simulations and Storyline curriculum to promote critical thinking and to present students with provocative essential questions and classrooms that value collaboration, rigor, and curiosity.

Our school is a K-8 focus-option public school in Portland, Oregon.

We strive to help our students become critical thinkers, courageous problem-solvers, and compassionate community builders by creating classrooms that offer opportunities for students to design their own projects and find creative means of communicating their learning. We count on our students to teach and learn from each other, and we expect our older students to model responsibility and inclusivity for their younger peers.

This project will specifically benefit students in grades 6-8, who need new options for novels sets to challenge them in their learning about the Middle Ages and Rennaisance.

My Project

These novels will serve to connect our Social Studies topics to the work my students are doing in Language Arts and will reinforce the learning they're doing in both subjects. In our weekly Lit Circles, students read and host small-group discussions that introduce them to new perspectives and strategies for having engaging academic conversations. Throughout the year, they build on their strategies for adding and responding to ideas about their shared texts.

These novels will provide our students with opportunities to learn about and discuss different author's views on dystopian and utopian futures.

Having studied the successes and failures of many civilizations throughout history, our students will use the imaginary worlds created in these novels to guide their thinking about the problems societies face and the systems we choose to solve them.
