Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One apple a day will stave off the doctor; a slice of pie while dieting and no one will really care. But, a shoe without its mate? No way! Double it up! You need a pair! Gracias and Tack. Grazie and Arrigato. Two languages at once? Yes, what a dynamic duo! My 30 students come from all over, including Lebanon, Liberia, the Philippines and Mexico. They speak Arabic, Creole, Tagalog and Spanish. If each child could read a book with English and their native tongues, a dynamic duo, We wouldn’t have to worry that skills in their first languages would vanish. Besides, research shows that proficiency in Language 1 helps students fair better in Language 2. So, please help get bilingual books for my 4th graders and they’ll be able to say dank or gracias or hvala AND thank you! Having a classroom library with bilingual books will benefit my students’ parents, as well. I am convinced that by making these books readily available to them, parents will realize that my desire that their children become proficient in English does not mean that I want them to disregard their native languages. Language is an integral part of self-esteem and cultural identity. Demonstrating my understanding of and respect for that may encourage parents to take a more active role in their children’s education because they feel confident that they can. Furthermore, the "pairing and sharing" with bilingual books will present parents as reading role models to their children. I teach 4th grade at William G. Hibbard Elementary School, located on Chicago’s northwest side, which serves a 95% low-income population with a 25% mobility rate. There are over 1,000 students enrolled in grades Pre-K through 6. Students at Hibbard represent countries from all over the world, including Assyria, Bosnia, Laos, Mexico, Somalia and Vietnam.
