My Project

We use Dungeons and Dragons to inspire students to read and reason. The use of games in the classroom help develop soft skills that normal curriculum leaves out. Using a role playing game in the classroom also engages students to read at a higher level and disseminate informational texts at a higher level than normally achieved by their peers.

Additional books and resources will make the classroom experience easier for my students.

The goals of the project are to provide an outlet for students to take the reigns of their imaginations and inspire them to use the skills learned at the table in their everyday life. Opportunities for leadership, teamwork and problem solving abound in each session of D&D. Giving students a chance to step outside their comfort zones and engage with peers in ways that might not happen in a normal classroom.

My students put in a tremendous amount of time researching and implementing their ideas in their character development. They use the lessons they learn in game to help each other with challenges they encounter in daily life. Kindness and empathy that are lost in regular instruction can be gained and cultivated in a safe environment at the gaming table. Although, the students are young they relay a sense of pride in how the handle their emotions better than their peers that are unable to attend our D&D sessions. With your generous donation we can expand this great opportunity to other students at our school.
