Drums for Our Kids!

Help me give my students an opportunity to play real Tubano drums. Tubano drums are large deep drums that go well with Orff instruments. We have a wonderful set of Orff instruments but no large drums!!

My Students

I teach in a PreK through sixth grade school in rural Arkansas. We are a Title 1 school. We are 100% free lunch. The students are bright and inquisitive but many come from poor families. They have never been exposed to many cultural activities.

Many of our students have never been to a big city.

Most students have never seen a live concert, play or symphony orchestra.

I teach elementary music and I love to expose my students to all kinds of music and many different instruments. I want all of my students to experience more music!

My Project

I would like for all of my students to have the opportunity to play a large tubano drum. I am an Orff certified teacher and instruments are an integral part of Orff teaching. My district has bought several glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones for our students but we have no large drums. I would like all of my students from PreK to 3rd grade to experience playing these large, authentic drums. My students would use the drums in daily lessons. They will use the drums to learn to read rhythms from music notation.

The drums are an essential part of music learning.

These drums will help students to develop the steady beat which is essential for musical growth. I have a budget of $250 a year. One drum is all I would be able to purchase. I will retire in a few years and I want the school's music department to have these instruments for the future. I have bought many small instruments for my students to use, but I cannot afford to make a personal purchase this large.

We would use these drums both in classroom lessons and performances. My third grade students are preparing a program based on the West African folk tale called "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears". Using these drums would help make this program more authentic and it would increase my students' understanding of African drumming and rhythms.
