My Students

I teach at a Title I urban school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch and 60% are considered economically disadvantaged. Our students are ethnically diverse (73.1% of the students are non-white), and 81.6% of them are English Language Learners or have English as their second language. Over 70% are also considered part of a high needs population. Our school also receives a large percentage of the new residents in Worcester and recently began to see many Middle Eastern refugees and Puerto Rican immigrants. Our students come from many countries and speak many different languages.

Despite what others would see as insurmountable challenges, the students at our school are motivated, bright, and eager to expand their world.

With our high needs, economically disadvantaged, and language learning population, music class is a place where each student can connect. They do not have to speak a common language to communicate creatively here. It is a safe place to create, respond, make mistakes, and encourage each other. We hope it will always be a place where they can discover themselves, learn how to deal with tough emotions, and easily be a part of the community.

My Project

Help my students have a fun, enriching, and valuable drumming experience! Students at our school are remote learning now but will be coming back to a socially distant learning environment in late Fall. This Drums Alive system will help with socially distant (and maybe even outdoor!) drumming activities. The "drums" are big, necessitating students spread out. Their materials are easily sanitized and cleaned. Most importantly, it will allow students to still experience and make music even in these strange times!

During a normal school year, these drums will also be invaluable in our classroom!

They are fun and provide real music experiences with movement and exercise (which really helps middle schooler engagement!). Drumming and rhythm is also a universal language that helps all students connect with each other as an ensemble and community, and easily get involved and stay engaged, no matter whether they are language learners, honors students, students with different learning needs or disabilities, etc. Students with disabilities will also be much more able to access drumming activities since the bright colors are engaging, the drumming surface area allows for all levels of motor skills ability, the bounce will allow them to feel how rhythm works, the softer noise won't bother sound-sensitive individuals, and the drums can be used either in a standing or a sitting position.

I'm so excited about the new and exciting activities the SMS students will be able to do with these Drums Alive sets!
