Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach elementary music to grades K-5 in a school with approximately 500 students. The school is in a lower income area of the city with a very high percentage of children on free or reduced lunch.

When I came to this school 4 years ago, the music instruments were either in poor shape or simply not there to use in classes. We had one hand drum with a plastic head that was split. We had no "special type" drums at all, such as conga drums, tubanos, or djembe drums. I have tried to add as many new percussions instruments as possible to use in my music classes so that more students can participate. I feel that providing for greater student participation allows students more opportunities to be creative and use their musical skills in class.

I ordered a book on using drums in the classroom to help develop success using the acronym "DRUM", meaning Discipline, Respect, and Unity Through Music. Though this was primarily intended to be used as a select group, I thought it would be great to adapt and use with the kids in all grade levels. My students like playing instruments, and drums in particular, as it gives them a chance to enhance not only their rhythmic skills, but their self-esteem as well. I like to include as many kids in the activities as much as possible as it give them a sense of achieving success not only individually, but as part of a larger group. My students need the 14 inch tunable djembe drum and stand and the Kids Percussion hand drum set for my music classes.

This addition to my music classes will not only allow for greater student participation, but give them the opportunity to perform on a greater variety of instruments in class.
