I teach music to over 600 enthusiastic students in grades K-8 at two elementary schools in an urban district in Illinois. General music classes for grades K-5 include performing on instruments, singing, moving and dancing to music. Rhythm and beat are 2 fundamental elements of music, and students can best learn to internalize these elements by moving to music with the beat and playing classroom instruments in tempo. For this proposal, I am requesting a total of 10 hand drums (10") for student use in general music classes. The drums will be used by all students in grades K-5 as they create and compose music. Drums will be used to explore the timbre of percussion instruments, and the drums will be used as props in dancing activities. The drums will be used by over 350 students during the course of the academic year. Hand drums provide students with the opportunity to engage in creative, accessible, and rhythmic music making activities. Students can explore musical elements of timbre, meter, form, rhythm, and improvisation with these instruments. Lessons will be based on National Music Education Standards.
