Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach elementary music in grades K-5. The school has a population of about 500 students, and is in a lower income neighborhood in the city. There is a very large percentage of children on free and reduced lunch. The school population will be increasing in the next couple of years due to expansion.

When I came to teach at this school 4 years ago, many of the music instruments were either in very bad shape or non-existent completely. I have tried to add as many new instruments as I can to use in my music classes to allow for more student participation.

I bought a book called "DRUM", which is an acronym for "Discipline, Respect, and Unity through Music". Though it was originally intended for use in a smaller group setting, I thought it would be a great idea to adapt it for use in all music classes and allow for greater participation.

My students need a set of conga drums and a tubano drum for use in my music classes. By adding these instruments to my music classes, it will allow for more students to achieve success in performing, not only individually, but in a larger group as well. I have always tried to involve as many kids in daily activities as possible.
