Drumming for Resilience

My students need Tubano drums so they can participate in a weekly drumming group that promotes self-esteem, builds resilience, and teaches positive coping skills.

My Students

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of my students face additional struggles such as poverty or homelessness.

My students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of my students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

My students are learning job, community, self-advocacy, and leisure skills that will help them live as independently as possible, stepping into meaningful lives as adults in their communities.

My Project

Access to these drums will help my students develop their relationships with music in meaningful, relevant ways. Drumming is a powerful modality that supports learning, attention, social skills, and resilience.

With these drums, my students will learn Afro-Carribbean drum patterns and styles, and participate in performance opportunities in their school and throughout the district.

Learning this new skill will promote student growth in self-esteem and self-worth in addition to the aforementioned goal areas.

Because so many of my students experience multiple, chronic struggles, it is important for them to have access to a leisure activity that will provide them with opportunities for positive coping. Drumming is a low-cost, lifelong skill that builds resilience, promotes relationships, and enhances quality of life.
