Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

African Drumming gives ALL middle school students a reason to get excited about coming to school every day! I teach music to students in grades 6-8. The community is very diverse and the classes are all inclusive, containing special education students and kids from varied ethnic and economic backgrounds.

Our school community is very diverse, yet there is essentially NO cultural programs in place involving the arts - one of the best ways to get students acquainted with world cultures. Furthermore, music is being dramatically cut from the city's class offerings and budget, and there are less students every year who are able to participate in a music class. The ones that do take music must choose between Band or Chorus which only appeal to 10% of the population. School funds can only be used for these two courses. Therefore, I can not purchase African drums or anything not being used in concert band or chorus.

Basically, we need some talking drums and and their associated percussion instruments to play the traditional music of the Dogbomba people of Ghana. As we are headed towards a future of increased worldwide relations and a global economy, students need to learn about non-western cultures or be cut-off from the opportunities they can offer.

Your donation will enable students who could not afford or obtain an instrument to be able to learn one of the most fascinating drums from Africa - the Talking Drum. Through the lessons that we would be able to do with your support, students will learn about the Dagbomba people, their language, customs and culture. They will be able to be involved in music that is closer to home for them than traditional music ensembles. The students will perform the music and feel that they are an important and valued part of our school community.
