Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are dynamic and thirsting to learn music.

Most of my students have never had the opportunity to study instrumental music before, and I take them from knowing nothing to being able to play Stars and Stripes Forever by the end of their high school career.

We are a Title I School, which means my students do not have the means to own an instrument, let alone take private lessons, so we give them everything from the instrument itself, to the equipment to take care of the instrument, to group and personal instruction so that they can become the best musician possible.

My Project

My students have been remote, and have been learning how to play drums on drum pads at home. Their progress has been fantastic, even in this crazy school year--not only have they learned how to read rhythms but have even learned to compose their own music.

Now that we have returned to blended learning, it would be fantastic for the students to transfer their musical knowledge onto real drums!

We only have a few drums that are playable, and with at least 11-12 students in each class, most of the students are still playing on their drum pads. They are so excited each time they have the chance to play on actual instruments--it would be wonderful if they all had the opportunity to play every single time they have class.

Finally, we are also trying to build a drumline to play for different occasions for the school. This incredibly difficult time period may end up being a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students' talents.
