My Students

Drum circles brings students together in a unique rhythmic experience that transcends language and cultural barriers. It is energizing, spontaneous, fun, creative, and synergizing for body, mind, and spirit.

My students are curious about world music and cultures.

I guess that comes from their equally curious music teacher - me! My students love music class and learning about different world cultures through music. Our Illinois school is Kindergarten through 6th grade, with almost 800 students. We are a high poverty district, with over 70% of our students on free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Tubanos are the base of drum circles--they can keep a steady beat or add deep, interesting rhythmic tones to the group performance. A drum circle is a wonderful philosophy where all performers are encouraged to play at their own level. My students will use the tubanos to create rhythm and work as a team to create their own music in a safe and fun setting. The students will learn that they can create music in many ways--even the easiest rhythm adds texture and interest to a piece of music.

The donations you make will impact all of my students by allowing them to create music at their own level.

Drum circles allow all students to be successful, which is so important to children like the ones at my school. Sometimes, the best part of their day is school, and even more selectively, their experience in music. I want my students to feel confident in the music room, which will, in turn, make them even more successful in the world.
