My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. Many also come from military families. We have many cultures represented at our school. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a Makerspace and are now working to extend our STEAM clubs, and we are encouraging girls to participate in STEAM activities.

My Project

The most authentic learning is when students are able to use STEM principals to experiment with options and find what works best. It is even better when they can relate them to real world problems.

To the Rescue: Engineering Aid Drop Packages allows students to find the best way to get materials to those in need given materials provided.

As students learn about the issues causes human crisis around the world; from flood, storms, war, or other event; one common theme exists. Food, water, and other supplies are desperately needed. Finding ways to get supplies to those in need is important.

We will use this in our STEM club as well as in our science classes. We can also use on our Family STEM night and our STEM Career day.

This kit will allow my students to plan and test different ways to get materials to those in need from scenarios presented to them. It will also help them develop empathy and understanding of those that are affected by adverse events.

The ability to care about others is as important to me as the understanding of the STEM principals they will be learning.
