Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As I begin my tenth year as an elementary school teacher in the South Bronx, I welcome the challenges. My students, who come from a very diverse, yet underserved and sometimes neglected community, are also up for the challenges. Thankfully, this year, I am “looping” or moving up with my kids from last year. Some of them have been able to stay in touch with me over the summer – just to say “hi” or to chat about their summer reading assignment. During the last month or so of school, I introduced them to an amazing book, "Freak the Mighty", by Rodman Philbrick. They were enthralled and naturally curious as to the outcome of this story. The book tells the story of how two boys – who are total opposites - and how they become best friends, in spite of their obvious differences. One boy, “Freak”, is frail and physically challenged, but has a brilliant mind. The other, “the Mighty”, has always felt inadequate and awkward because of his size, and his lack of academic ability or achievement. They meet and form a bond, helping each other in enumerable ways. “Freak” realizes that regardless of his physical challenges, he is a wondrous and strong individual in so may other ways. “The Mighty” overcomes his fear and shame, to realize he “has a brain” after all! I use this realistic-fiction text to show my kids that life is not only full of challenges, but full of promise also. Unfortunately, only two of my kids were able to buy or borrow the book. After searching several public libraries, one mom told me that she finally had to purchase the book. This brings me to another sad realization about this “underserved” community. About a year ago, the community library was torn down. It will be at least three years before a new library is built in its place. With a fiscal crisis hovering over our city, I doubt very much that a library in the South Bronx will be a priority on any city officials list. Sad, but very true! Also, sad, is the fact that the “stipend” (teacher’s choice) that is given to teachers (after the fact) has been cut back from $260 to $150. Thankfully, I never depend upon this stipend to acquire what I know my kids will need in order to have a successful school year. To date, I have already spent at least $600. For what I get in return, it’s worth it! However, it’s coming to a point where I need a little help. My kids (all 24) would love, and deserve to have their very own personal copy of "Freak the Mighty". Fortunately for us the tale of "Freak the Mighty" does not end with this book! No, there is a sequel, titled "Max the Mighty". I would love for my kids to be able to continue this story of friendship, courage and overcoming obstacles. So, I am also asking for 24 copies of the sequel. Please help my kids to start their year off with a big bang, as they Drop Everything and Read! My kids have within them all of these ready-to-share talents and insights, just waiting to burst forth. I know that a life filled with the excitement that literature has to offer, will continue to speak to and spark their interests and aspirations.
