Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Title One school has six hundred students in pre-k through fifth grade. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. The student body at my school is one hundred percent free lunch and breakfast. Each student deserves a dignified education. Unfortunately, many students do not have their basic necessities met outside of school.

My students do not let their socioeconomic status affect their desire for learning.

The students are eager learners and have a love for school, which for many, is the only consistent part of their lives. Everyday, I learn more about their struggles, their hardships, and their courage. I attempt to foster an environment that helps each student feel comfortable, safe and enjoy learning.

The diverse life experiences of my students bring a unique atmosphere to my classroom and our entire school. There is never a day in which I am not in awe of my students' lives, both good and bad. My students are excited to be at school. Our school offers the most consistent home many of them will have with their most consistent family.

My Project

An increasing number of our day-to-day activities rely on STEM. By having a drone in school, my students can gain a deeper understanding of how a drone can impact various aspects of their lives. They get to appreciate the technology involved, witness practical demonstrations of complex theory, and recognize how advanced ideas have a role to play in improving our world. STEM subjects cross-pollinate into other fields. Students need to learn how these tools and ideas are changing lives every day.

I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to understand how a STEM subject can enable us to thrive as a society and empower us to make changes.

Exploring the diverse uses of drones can help demonstrate that STEM is valuable beyond the obvious industries and truly touches people’s lives.

The theory aspect in STEM fields is fascinating and a testament to the creativity of human thought. However, purely theoretical discussions are not always understood by students. By having a drone I will support theory with demonstrations and experiments. STEM fields are inspiring, and we need to take advantage of the full range of opportunities at our disposal!
