Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Digital skills are only one aspect of 21st Century learning, but they are virtually impossible to teach when approximately half of my students have trouble getting consistent access to a computer and the internet. I teach in a diverse, urban high school with exciting programs in science, math and the arts. I teach tenth and eleventh grade English, and the potential to use digital tools as we hone our language skills and tap into the vibrant local culture and varied passions of my students is incredible.

Last year, I built an online Ning site (a private social network) for our classroom, where students could collaborate on their research processes and post and respond to each others' work digitally, while also building community and a strong sense of netiquette. Although I was able to get us into the lab and get us a cart full of laptops to use on many occasions, one thing that kept students from being able to fully participate in the Ning site was that they were having to work from several different computers wherever and whenever they had access (such as the library, my classroom, their friends who have no web access, their uncle's house, the public library, etc.) Often, students would get started on their work, only to go home and realize that their work was "stuck" in their student account at school. Many students became proficient at e-mailing files back and forth to themselves, but they often lost track of which version was the new one, or had other similar problems. Because of complications with something as simple as file storage and organization, these students missed out on opportunities to revise writing they had already done, often starting a paper over again in a panic to finish.

I taught some students about Google Docs and Box.net, but for many, it would have been much simpler if they could have gotten hold of a flash drive. However, many students really didn't have the ten dollars to go spend on that kind of school supply. Knowing how to manage one's digital files is essential to college and life success, and these students faced challenges that others did not in trying to navigate the online landscape. By having a set of flash drives to check out to my students, I will have taken an obstacle out of their paths.

Please help me make it as easy as possible for all students to make full use of the digital tools that are so essential to their success in college and in the workplace by donating to my project.
