My Students

Do you remember your first job, and how your first professional attire changed your behavior and attitude? My students can use lab coats to take science more serious and see it as a profession. Let's take setting high expectations to even a higher level by having kids engage in science in lab coats.

I teach students with disabilities.

They represent a staggering 18% of the school student population which is higher than the national and state. In addition, they many are english learners, visual learners, tactile/kinetic learners, and all have low socio-economic status. Most have free or reduced lunch, and find it difficult to purchase school supplies throughout the school year. My students are eager learners and want the same opportunities as general education students. They work hard and will tell you that they want serious careers. They need more than just a school they need an advocate someone to help them achieve their dreams. They need a teacher who cares and understands them. My students attend a Title 1 school. Most of my students have a specific learning disability that has caused them not to be as successful in a general education classroom setting.

My Project

I truly believe that these lab coats can help change my students attitude towards learning. It will give them a real feel as to what is expected from them out of 21st Century businesses and that is being responsible, doing your best, working with others, and seeing yourself as a change agent for the better. My students will be able to see themselves in the science field by wearing lab coats as we conduct experiments and learn about scientific investigation.

You will make a difference in the lives of my students!

I know that none of them have ever worn a lab coat nor been treated as professionals. My students deserve an opportunity to understand and seek a career in the sciences. You can provide more than just a discussion of what scientist wear but giving them opportunity to wear a lab coat for the first time and everytime thereafter. You can change how they view the field of science.
