Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 500 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in business, promotes college and career readiness, offers year-round experiences that include many business based competitions, work-based learning opportunities, service learning, mentoring, and internships.

However, many of the students living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters, often choose not to participate or turn down life-changing opportunities simply because they are embarrassed that they do not have the business attire they feel are required to participate. Having the right attire will be a game changer for these students to succeed at trying to grab the best of what the world has to offer!

My Project

My students living at, slightly above, and way below the poverty line need this business attire to take advantage of the business competition experiences, work-based learning, networking, and internships opportunities that our school and it's partners offer. Without the right clothing, many of these students will not participate in these programs out of fear and embarrassment. Having the right clothes will boost their morale and give them the confidence that is needed to promote themselves in the business world. A higher rate in participation in these programs will also lead to more mentoring programs from our corporate sponsors thus increasing their college and career readiness before graduation.
