My Project

I am requesting copies of Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, a beautiful memoir in verse that shares the author’s experiences growing up during the Civil Rights Movement. This novel will not only help my students strengthen their reading and writing skills but also spark meaningful conversations about identity, resilience, and social justice. The poetic structure of the book makes it accessible to all readers while challenging them to analyze rich themes and literary elements.

This project is especially meaningful as we celebrate Black History Month, providing my students with an opportunity to honor Black voices, reflect on historical struggles and triumphs, and connect those lessons to their own lives.

By introducing this text, I hope to create a learning environment where my students can see themselves reflected in the stories they read while also developing critical thinking and empathy. My goal is to inspire them to find their own voices and connect to larger themes of perseverance and hope.

My students are special because they bring a variety of unique backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences into the classroom. Many of them are at a critical stage in developing their identities and discovering their strengths, and Brown Girl Dreaming offers them a chance to explore these concepts in a meaningful way. This project will give them the tools to grow as readers, thinkers, and individuals—and will help them dream big for their futures.
