Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the most amazing group of 6th graders that I have the pleasure of spending the next three years with. This group of 30 kids is the "Dream Team" we spend several hours a day with each other reading, laughing, and learning. I am so inspired by their drive to read and learn in order to become college ready. My students reading levels range from PreK - grade level. Despite the wide range of reading levels in my class these students have so much respect for each other and are constantly encouraging their classmates and friends to dive into rich world literature day after day. I recently had a student leave me a note on my desk "I struggle with reading MR. I sorry." This note brought me to tears I knew at that moment these students needed me more than ever, and I have to do my best to help them and inspire them to be the best they can be. “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right.” - Henry Ford knew self-confidence is the key to success.

My Project

Our school focuses on the importance of literacy, and this is my first year with an Advisory. Advisory is a group of students I will spend the next three years with encouraging and inspiring them to read and look at reading as a pleasure and not a chore. I am only a second year teacher and have a limited amount of books in my library. This makes it difficult to push my students to read and offer a variety of literature in different reading ranges. Our students spend at least 1 hour a day reading with me, and I want them to spend more time reading books they are interested in than looking through my library or lack thereof for something they may like. These series like Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter and others are all books they have requested.

These books will allow my students to grow and build a love for reading over the course of the next three years.

I know this is a lot to ask for but as you know we call our advisory the "Dream Team" and we like to dream big.
