Dream Project: Vision Boards to Help My Students Create Goals

Help me give my students canvases, markers, scrapbook supplies, glue, scissors, and rulers to make vision boards.

My Project

My students live in a rural area in Upper Michigan. We are a high poverty school district and one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

As an educator and English teacher, I am an encourager of stories.

I firmly believe that our stories connect us and are important in how we perceive our place in the world.

I am looking ahead to the 2025-2026 school year and I would love to start the school year by having my students create Vision Boards/Identity Projects. Not only would these projects help me get to know my students, but it will help create a classroom community and allow my students to think critically about who they are.

Since we spend the majority of our classroom experience writing, I strive to create a supportive classroom where students feel safe to share their stories. These identity projects will create a central theme that we will carry and reflect on throughout our entire year together.

I think the Vision Boards would be a great way for my students to choose personal and academic goals and provide them with multiple prompts to generate writing. I am excited about the potential of these pieces of art to help my students tell their stories.
