My Project

Hello! I am Miss. Owens, a middle school English teacher within the Philadelphia school district. I am asking for novels and a bookshelf to help create a library that my students can be excited to use!

I have selected novels that are representative of my student population.

When selecting these novels, I kept in mind each student's intersectionality, their differing identities. For example, within the "Percy Jackson" series by Rick Riordan, we follow Percy Jackson along his journeys. As students read the novel, they will come to realize that Percy may very well be just like them as he has Dyslexia.

Another novel I cannot wait for my students to have the opportunity to read is "Dragons in a Bag" by Zetta Elliott. This novel allows for inner-city students to imagine themselves as the hero! The story follows Jaxon, who spends a day with Ma. His day goes completely unexpected as he spends it helping her deliver baby dragons to a magical kingdom! I would like for each of my students to know that they too can go on great adventures just like Percy Jackson, Jaxon, and many other characters within the novels that I have hand selected.

Along with the novels, I am also requesting a rotating bookshelf. As we would be receiving new books, it is important to have a proper home to care for them all. I have selected a rotating bookshelf as it may entice students to go and discover a new novel to read. Another plus side of this would be the accessibility the book shelf would allow for many of my students.

Many of my students come into my classroom stating that they do not know the last time they have read a book for pleasure... I would like to change that.
