My Students

My students love to learn and love to be challenged. I teach at a public high school where the teachers are very caring and the students take pride in their school. Our students are hardworking and come from very diverse backgrounds. We have a mix of socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures, but that is what makes our school strong. Our differences help unite us.

Students learn that through hard work and perseverance, they can accomplish anything.

A very important word our students learn is "yet." I don't know how to do this yet or I don't understand this yet. Our school culture fosters growth and improvement and helps everyone understand that they help determine their own futures.

My Project

I believe that every student should be equipped with a base of knowledge from each of the 3D Literacy elements. Knowledge of how to operate 3D printers, the ability to dream up an idea and design it using 3D CAD software and programming skills to control electrical circuits and machines provides a strong foundation of engineering fundamentals. For math and science projects, students will be given opportunities to combine the elements of 3D literacy while developing new technological ideas, thus fueling innovation.

3D printing offers multiple ways for students to get hands-on experience and gain marketable skills before graduating from high school.

I want my students to learn about the process of 3D printing and how the printer itself works. My students will become designers and makers and share their creations with the world. This grant will help me develop more creators of technology rather than consumers! Right now, students are fascinated about taking an idea and making it into reality. The 3D printer can help make this happen!

As the math department head, I am helping to develop a robust curriculum around the 3D printer to make it a fully effective teaching and learning tool. For example, in our new STEM Trig class, students will be designing a course for a robotic ball. They can dream up all of the components, then design them, and finally print them to be used in the project! Students in geometry classes will learn about structures, patterns, and shapes and will be able to print imaginative creations! Computer science and biological engineering students will use 3D printed parts along with Raspberry Pi and Arduinos to truly create innovative objects like a mind-controlled 3D hand that can grasp a ball and then drop. The possibilities are endless! 3D Literacy + Creativity = Innovation!
