My Students

My students are 9th graders who require reading intervention and ELA support. They have been working hard to increase their reading, English language, and STEM literacy skills. They are a curious, tech savvy, and diverse group of boys and girls who are often the first generation in their family to aim for a college education.

My students know that going to college to pursue a STEM field is a steep climb with difficult odds, but they come to school everyday ready to give it another shot.

My Project

I would love to bring my students to see the inspiring IMAX movie "Dream Big: Engineering Our World." This film about everyday engineers at work will show my students how our minds can reimagine problems in ways that have such a helpful impact on communities around the world. Most importantly, this film will show my students real life success stories of minority students pursuing studies in STEM fields, which is something my students always need to see more of.

In addition to watching Dream Big: Engineering Our World, we will visit the Earthquake Exhibit and the Endeavor Exhibit in the Science Center.

This semester we have explored, annotated, and discussed various sources related to the movie and to STEM education, which I found available in Newsela and Youtube. We are currently annotating, summarizing, discussing, and writing about earthquake engineering.

It is my hope that this trip will not only provide a real world context to our classwork, but that it will also inspire students to continue reading and thinking about STEM education over the Summer and beyond.
