Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In September I begin teaching in an inner city public school in Massachusetts serving 501 students in grades PK-4. The Department of Education statistics show that 78% of our population have high needs and that 65% of our families are economically disadvantaged. Additionally, for 32% of the students, English is not the first language, and of those, 17% have little or no English language skills. At this time the school is among the lowest performing schools in the state. During a state inspection, the staff got high marks for positive interaction with the students and has been awarded a Level 3 Turnaround Grant.

I am joining the staff to help with the turnaround efforts.

My plan is to engage the students in creating, performing, and responding to music. Activities will include, singing, playing instruments, listening and moving to music. Students will have opportunities on a regular basis to improvise and compose both vocal and instrumental music. My students will love coming to music class!

My Project

Learning music and how to play an instrument has both social and academic benefits; it instills discipline, builds confidence and self-esteem and it is important to cognitive development. Kids who are involved in a quality music program tend to do better in school and score higher on standardized tests.

The time is right to add ukulele to my elementary school music curriculum.

It can be played as a solo instrument or as part of a band. The ukulele can be enjoyed for a lifetime. The ukulele is popular, inexpensive, takes up little space, is easy to play and lots of fun!

Without a doubt, over the past few years, the ukulele has established a strong presence in popular music, with songs surfacing like Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Hey Soul Sister by "Train", Oh What a Day by Ingrid Michaelson, and covers of I’m Yours by Jason Mraz.

Compared to other instruments, like guitars and pianos, ukuleles are relatively cheap. You can get a pretty decent and playable ukulele for less than $50.

While the ukulele won’t fit in your pocket, you can easily take it wherever you go. Because of its small size, both adults and children can easily play a standard soprano ukulele. It is also easy to store.

All of my students can be successful playing ukulele. Because it only has four strings, it is relatively easy to learn to play ukulele compared to other instruments. Most playing can actually be done on only 3 strings!

My students will have fun playing ukulele. It is a fun instrument to play and it’s a fun instrument to listen to. Fun can really have a big impact on the learning process.
