My Students

Toddlers' marks on paper are a wide world of possibility. The innovative process of mark-making continues as we learn our letters, numbers, & mature. Yet the value of these pictures, & the integral learning that occurs with a chance to draw, share, & reflect upon our work is often taken for granted.

Ours is a military community where most of our students have experienced more than one overseas deployment of a parent during their young lives.

More than 70% of our population receives free and reduced meals, which means that resources at home are stretched thinly. Our students are creative and bright, and more and more is expected from them academically each year. However, the opportunity to make ART and learn how art is a part of our world is frequently limited to little more than the 40 minutes that they spend in Art class each week.

My Project

Visual journals give students a central place to do more than just draw pictures. Students gain a place to write about their art experiences. They are encouraged to use the terminology of the art room to enrich their vocabularies as we reflect upon our own and others' art. They gain a deeper understanding of the role the Visual Arts play in our lives as they assess the art works seen, created, and experienced in class. The process of creating a visual journal can be an art form in and of itself. The booklets requested contain 20 pages of art quality paper. Two-thirds of the page is for drawing, while the bottom third is lined for writing. Each student who is here in May will bind their booklets together to create a cumulative journal. The short booklet form and price mean that those who have to move during the year can take their journal with them without the worry of what to do with a more expensive journal full of empty pages.

Since these journals combine a place to draw with lined spaces for writing, they are a practical way to engage elementary level students in the art of keeping a journal.

I hope that many will go on to make or purchase their own journals for use at home, and will gain the vocabulary and skills to articulate their thoughts and emotions as they cartoon, sketch, paint, and create.
