Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first-year, 3rd grade teacher in a low-income public school. Our student body is composed entirely of racial minority students. My students love art. Whenever we have spare time in the classroom, the first question my students ask me is if they can use their time for drawing. They make cards, illustrate stories, sketch, and color. My students love to draw, but unfortunately we have no art teacher to help them develop their skills as young artists. We also have no class budget with which to buy the supplies necessary for teaching art. The few art materials that are included in the school supplies are of such low quality that they have very limited use in the classroom. We have five sets of markers to share among the whole class, and the cheap off-brand crayons we have crumble and break easily. It pains me to see that my students aren’t being provided opportunities for creativity and artistic expression because they had the misfortune of growing up in a low-income neighborhood during a time of budget cuts. My students deserve to have high quality art supplies. They deserve to explore the different possibilities for creative expression using charcoal, color pencils, pastels, and other media. They should have the chance to draw on paper that's thick enough that it won't tear. By funding this grant, you’ll be providing my students with art materials that they otherwise won’t have access to in our school. You’ll also be giving them opportunities to hone their art skills and develop habits of creative thinking. You’ll be giving them the chance to learn to express themselves using art, which is something all children deserve to experience.
