Help Ms. A.

I teach art at Adams Elementary, a K-5 year round school in Wake County, North Carolina. I teach over 850 students approximately once a week. We sure do use a lot of paper! My students frequently need to do sketches to plan out a design. Sometimes it is worth drawing those sketches on paper and having students save them in their folders. Other times, it just seems like a waste of paper, and the cost of even relatively cheap newsprint paper tends to add up. I am reluctant to prevent students from drawing sketches, because we try to go through the artistic process and mirror what an artist would do while planning out a work. Most artists at least have the availability of drawing materials to do planning drawings. For many of my older students, the finality of drawing something on their paper makes it difficult for them to get started with an idea. Students like to go up to the whiteboard and sketch on the whiteboard because it is easy to erase and has a nice bold look to it. Unfortunately there is not room for more than two or three students to use the whiteboard at a time. A class set of 12 inch by 18 inch, portable dry erase boards would be perfect for helping students generate ideas and practice drawing without using a lot of paper. Thank you for reading my proposal. I hope you consider funding a class set of dry erase boards for us!
