My Students

Toddler's marks on paper create a wide world of possibilities. The innovative process of mark-making continues as we learn our letters, numbers, and mature. Yet the value of these pictures, and the integral learning that occurs with a chance to draw, share, and reflect upon our work is often taken for granted.

Our school is located within a military community where most of our students have experienced more than one overseas deployment of a parent during their young lives.

More than 70% of our population receives free and reduced meals, which means that resources at home are stretched thin. Our students are creative, bright, and more and more is expected from them academically each year. However, the opportunity to make Art and learn how art is a vital part of our world, is frequently limited to little more than the 40 minutes that they spend in Art class each week.

My Project

Visual journals give students a central place to do more than just draw pictures. Students enrich their art vocabularies as they reflect upon their own and others' art. They gain a place to write about their art experiences and see their own growth as artists when they compare old entries with new. They gain a deeper understanding of the role the Visual Arts play in our lives as they assess the art works seen, created, and experienced in class. They see firsthand that the process of creating a visual journal can be an art form in and of itself. The 198 booklets requested contain 20 pages of art quality paper. Two-thirds of the page is for drawing, while the bottom third is lined for writing. In May, students will bind their booklets together to create a cumulative journal. The short booklet form and price mean that those who have to move during the year can take their journal with them without the worry of what to do with a more expensive journal full of empty pages.

Since these journals combine a place to draw with lined spaces for writing, they are a practical way to engage elementary level students in the art of keeping a journal.

Students will learn to compare new entries with old and will be able to see their own growth. They will become more adept at articulating their thoughts and emotions as they cartoon, sketch, paint, and create.
