Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember all the fun you had in kindergarten playing in the kitchen area or dressing up like a firefighter or pretending you were in the doctor's office? The dramatic play center is one of the most memorable areas in a kindergarten classroom, where the imagination can run wild and kids can have fun!

I teach 25 energetic kindergarteners at a public school in Brooklyn, NY and for most of my students kindergarten is their first school experience.

It is a very special community in which my school is located. It is predominately Spanish and Chinese speaking families, which means my students are English language learners. Students and families enter my classroom and a whole new world awaits them! It is a very exciting time anticipating what they will learn during the year!

My Project

Choice time is a very important time during the day in kindergarten. It is a time when children have meaningful play engaging in activities that foster social and emotional development as well as language. The materials I requested will help support and make the dramatic play center more engaging and exciting. For example, by adding a cash register to the center, a grocery store scene can take place. With the addition of baby dolls, children can act out the family roles. Or by adding a doctor kit with costume, children can pretend to be doctors and patients in a hospital. The additions of the materials give children such a range of real life scenarios to act out!!! Children love imaginative play. When children engage in this type of play they naturally engage in using the language in a free, uninhibited way. In having a broader variety of materials for dramatic play, it gives children more opportunities to talk, learn the language and gain valuable social experience.

My dramatic play center is boring at best.

These materials will take it to another level. They will provide opportunities to pretend to be in a restaurant or play with the babies, to pretend to be a doctor or vet! What fun awaits them with these new materials. My students will gain new vocabulary and social skills that they would not have been able to get without these materials. Play is so important in kindergarten and these materials would be an amazing tool to support language growth.
