My Students

My school services students from kindergarten through 5th grade. These students may be from the tiny borough of Bath in Pennsylvania, but they are BIG readers! They use a reading and writing program that revolves around the use of novels to create great readers and writers.

Reading interests vary but they all have something in common- a mutual love for reading!

It's not uncommon to hear conversations comparing the writings of Kate DiCamillo to Katherine Applegate or other accomplished authors. When given the opportunity, children can develop love for and connection with great literature.

My Project

If you've ever attempted to engage 5th grade readers in the fantasy genre, you'd know that there's no "one size fits all" title. Traditional dragons might work for some, but others need something a bit more modern like Minecraft or aquatic like mermaids.

With these new books, my students will be able to explore the many ways authors engage us with fantasy stories.

Mystery, magic, intrigue, and excitement will grab their attention and keep them reading. In designing this project, I asked some of my most dedicated readers to share a title that they loved and wanted others to read. That encouraged me to add books such as Haroun and the Sea of Stories and the Kingdom Keepers series.

A majority of the titles chosen for this project include clusters of series books. This is designed to help 5th graders read across texts and make connections--What is the book REALLY about? What struggles do the characters face over time? How do the trials and tribulations of the characters change the course of the series? What can the characters' experiences teach you about the world around you? What lessons can you take away from the excitement and struggles of the characters?
